Statutory redundancy pay increases

New limits on employment statutory redundancy pay came into force from April..
Employers that dismiss employees for redundancy must pay those with two years’ service an amount based on the employee’s weekly pay, length of service and age, to a maximum £489 per week.

Statutory family-related pay and sick pay rates increase

From 2nd April 2017 the weekly rate of statutory maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental pay increased to £140.98

From 6 April 2017 the weekly rate of statutory sick pay increased to £89.35.

Apprenticeship levy is introduced

The apprenticeship levy to fund apprenticeship training was introduces on 6 April 2017.
Employers will pay the monthly levy via PAYE if they have a salary bill of more than £3 million.
Employers in England that pay the levy will be able to access funding through a digital service.
The new system of funding is expected to operate from 1 May 2017.
Employers that do not pay the levy will also be able to access funding for apprenticeships.

Minimum wage

The National Minimum Wage increased on 1 October. The new rates are:
• workers aged 21-24 £6.95 an hour (up by 25p)
• development rate for workers aged 18-20 £5.55 an hour (up by 25p)
• young workers rate for 16-17 year old £4.00 an hour (up by 13p)
• apprentices under 19, or over 19 but in first year, £3.40 (up by 10p)

The government cracks down on employers not paying the minimum wage

The government has announced a package of measures to enforce the National Minimum Wage (NMW), and National Living Wage (NLW) from its introduction next year. While the overall maximum penalty for underpayment of the wage will stay the same at £20,000 per worker, new measures include doubling the penalties for non-payment of the statutory rates from 100 per cent to 200 per cent of the arrears (halved if employers pay within 14 days), and introducing a new team of HMRC ...

Immigration Bill
The aim of this bill is to prevent illegal working, crack down on the exploitation of low-skilled migrant workers, and reduce net migration. On illegal working, employers are to be informed when employees’ visas expire, so they will have no defence if they continue to employ such individuals and could face a penalty of up to £20,000.
